My Top 5 Woods for wood-burning (Pyrography)

When I first started wood-burning I had no clue what wood to use, or where to get wood. I have found that a local timber yard (I use Morgan Timber) is a great place to find nice wood that is reasonably priced. Although this wood may need a bit more work before you can start to burn onto it, it usually needs more sanding (if you wanted the edges curved ect).

Buying chopping boards and sanding them down can also be good to use. But remember to fully sand off the coating/finish before you start to burn onto the wood. Or it could damage your wood-burner and the wood. (I have learnt this the hard way haha). Its always best to work with raw wood, so strip it as best as you can (electric sander is the easiest option).

TOP 5

1. Cherry

(Band B hardwood) Estimate price around £18-22 per metre. Although prices change due to inflation and OFF CUTS can be a bit cheaper.

3. Maple

(Band B hardwood) Estimate price around £18-22 per metre. Although prices change due to inflation and OFF CUTS can be a bit cheaper.

3. Oak

(Band A hardwood) Rough estimate price around £13-19 per metre. Although prices change due to inflation and OFF CUTS can be a bit cheaper.

4. Ash

(Band A hardwood) Rough estimate price around £13-19 per metre. Although prices change due to inflation and OFF CUTS can be a bit cheaper.

5. Bamboo

They don't supply bamboo at the Timber Yard, but you can find it in lots of styles of chopping boards, which are easy to strip off the coating/finish. Its always best to work with raw wood, so strip it as best as you can (electric sander is the easier option).

I hope you found this helpful, happy wood-burning. :)
